MRIEHEL, MALTA
This architectural piece is separated into 2 distinct parts, creating a minimal yet striking aesthetic – a solid, white volume with vertical elements resting atop a glass box.
The simplicity of the design stems from the careful study of timeless, pure forms which create dynamic interplays of light and shadow that take inspiration from natural elements – particularly the path of the sun throughout the day. Thoughtful consideration was given to the articulation of a building which would seamlessly integrate various functions and occupants under the same roof, creating a particular identity for the architecture as well as a pleasant working environment for its users.
Below ground level, a workshop area is designed to facilitate hands-on activities, experimentation, and practical learning. This space is equipped with a variety of machinery and resources tailored to the building industry, maximising space efficiency whilst minimising noise and disruption to other areas of the building.
The ground and first floors house retail centres and exhibition spaces, servicing as complementary areas to the offices above. These spaces are open, inviting and flexible, allowing for easy reconfiguration. The use of transparent volumes enhances visibility and connectivity with the street, inviting natural light and offering a glimpse within.
The office spaces within the upper volume provide a conducive environment for focused work, meetings, and collaboration among professionals. Inspired by the sun’s path, the design incorporates strategic fenestration and shading elements to optimise natural light and thermal comfort throughout the day. The layout of the offices and ancillary spaces is organised to maximise efficiency, foster communication, and promote a sense of community among occupants.
