THE KING GEORGE | 2020
GHARGHUR, MALTA
Nestled in the historic village of Gharghur, The King George Project showcases how the renovation and extension of a traditional Maltese building can imbue the identity of the traditional Maltese village whilst remaining relevant through the use of fundamental and timeless principles. Injecting new life into this building, now a boutique hotel, the project is deeply rooted in the heritage and cultural significance of its setting, ensuring that the architecture honours the village’s rich history while adapting to contemporary needs.
The design process began with an exploration of Gharghur’s architectural legacy and cultural context, guiding the project with sensitivity and respect for the existing environment. The renovation focuses on blending the old with the new by carefully stripping away unnecessary elements to their pure forms and highlighting the building’s essential features. Following vernacular ideals of scale and proportion, the articulation of the apertures allows for an interplay of natural light and shadow, creating dynamic focal points that celebrate the architectural elements of the original structure.
Key to this project is the harmony between the new additions and the local vernacular. The extension integrates seamlessly with the local limestone masonry, maintaining the architectural integrity while incorporating modern functions. The result is a boutique hotel that not only preserves the historical essence of the building but also enhances it with contemporary elegance and comfort.
