MADLIENA, MALTA

The building’s distinct location and orientation in Madliena form the foundation for this project, taking strong influence from natural elements. Pure forms and the interplay of light and shadow, combined with the thoughtful articulation of openings and apertures gave rise to a simple yet striking architecture.

The client’s daily routine also strongly influenced the design, leading to an east-to-west orientation that aligns with the site’s natural sun path. The eastern end houses the home office, which flows into an open living space and finally a master bedroom with sunset views. Each space is conceived as a distinct volume, collectively forming a cohesive whole. The interstitial spaces between volumes allow for the integration of features such as skylights and diverse vegetation. The lower levels of the house are thoughtfully designed to meet the various needs of the family. Multiple bedrooms provide privacy and comfort for each member, complemented by additional spaces such as a gym, lounge area, and a playroom tailored for young children. Throughout these levels, a series of terraces are strategically placed to enhance natural light and airflow, creating a healthier and more inviting living environment.

To unify the interior design, a cohesive material palette was carefully curated for the entire house. Different zones and activities informed the thoughtful selection of materials, ensuring each space embodies its intended atmosphere. Natural woods, chosen for their warmth and tranquillity, dominate in the calmer spaces such as bedrooms and lounges. The use of dark and light tones throughout the interiors not only enhances visual interest but also harmonizes with the building’s architectural form, creating a balanced and cohesive aesthetic that reflects the home’s modern yet inviting atmosphere.
