Sailor's House is a renovated family home situated on the outskirts of Naxxar. The initial focus of the intervention was to analyse the already present elements of the building and to respect its relative scale. Present alignments were followed when designing the extensions that resulted in a proposal of two connecting volumes that appear to be folding in on one another. The same logic was used to sensitively open thin apertures that allow for natural light to penetrate into the upper floors whilst providing panoramic, long distance views. An interior program is therefore established that allows for bedrooms to utilise the older, smaller apertures- becoming more intimate and calmer. In contrast, the new extension allows for more leisurely living areas. By using polished stone cladding on the extension, the older limestone below is complemented but is also clearly defined which establishes an important distinction between the new and the old.
